Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
